What is a filled radar chart?
A filled radar chart shades the polygon connecting an entity’s values across several radial axes. The fill makes the profile more prominent, while the vertices still carry the individual measurements. It is a visual summary of a multidimensional profile, not an area-based total.
When to use it
Use it when a small number of profiles need a recognisable shape, such as comparing two products against a common rubric. The dimensions should use comparable scales. Prefer an unfilled radar when overlap hides the outlines, or bars when exact values matter more than the overall profile.
Design tips
Use restrained fill opacity so the profile underneath remains visible. Keep outlines distinct enough to follow at crossings.
Keep a common zero baseline, consistent scale limits and a stable spoke order. Changing any of these can dramatically alter the polygon.
Avoid interpreting filled area as a combined score. Area depends on the arrangement of the axes as well as the measurements.
