What is a smooth line chart?
A smooth line chart connects observations with curves instead of straight segments. It can make a gradual pattern easier to follow, but the values between the recorded points are still an interpolation. A curved path does not add measurements or make sparse data more precise.
When to use it
Use a smooth line when the underlying measure plausibly changes continuously and the broad shape is more useful than sharp month-to-month corners. Use a straight line for discrete jumps, or when a curve could imply unobserved peaks and dips. A fitted trendline answers a different question: it summarises a relationship rather than simply connecting points.
Design tips
Keep the observation frequency clear. A smooth curve through six monthly values is not daily data.
Check the path around sharp changes and near zero. Some interpolation methods can imply values outside the observed range.
Use points or selective labels when readers need to distinguish recorded values from the connecting curve. Avoid describing visual smoothing as a forecast.
