Candlestick chart

Show open, high, low and close for each period in a single mark.

What is a candlestick chart?

A candlestick draws the open-to-close range as a body and the high-to-low range as a wick, with colour showing whether the period closed up or down. Four numbers in one mark, repeated per period.

When to use it

Use it for price series and any measure with a genuine open, high, low and close — trading, energy prices, auction results. Use a line chart of closes when the intraday range is not part of the question.

Design tips

  • Colour by direction only, and keep the two colours distinguishable without relying on red and green alone.

  • Do not force the value axis to zero; the range is the subject, not the absolute level.

  • Keep gaps between candles narrower than the bodies so the series reads as a sequence.

Use when only interval endpoints matter, without open and close.

Use when the closing trajectory matters more than within-period range.
