React chart example

Funnel chart

Show how a population narrows across the stages of a process.

What is a funnel chart?

A funnel chart stacks the stages of a sequential process, each sized by how many remain at that point. The narrowing shape shows where the largest drop-off happens.

When to use it

Use it for conversion: visitors to sign-ups to paid, or applicants to hires. It only makes sense when every stage is a strict subset of the one above. When stages can be skipped or revisited, use a Sankey diagram instead.

Design tips

  • Label each stage with both the count and the conversion from the previous stage.

  • Keep stage order top to bottom; a funnel is a sequence, not a ranking.

  • Do not use area to encode the value as well as width — one encoding per number.
