React chart example

Parallel coordinates

Compare many variables at once by drawing each record as a line across parallel axes.

What is a parallel coordinates?

A parallel coordinates plot gives each variable its own vertical axis and draws one line per record, crossing every axis at its value. Patterns emerge from how lines bundle and cross.

When to use it

Use it for multivariate comparison — specifications, model outputs, survey responses across several measures. It shows correlation and clusters that a scatter plot cannot with more than two variables. Use a scatter plot when only two variables matter.

Design tips

  • Normalise each axis, and label the real range at both ends.

  • Let readers reorder axes; adjacency drives which relationships are visible.

  • Use transparency so overlapping lines show density rather than a solid block.

Compare with

Use when only two numeric variables need comparison.

Use when a third measure can be expressed through point size.
