React chart example

Small multiples

Repeat one small chart per category on a shared scale.

What is a small multiples?

Small multiples split a busy chart into a grid of small panels, one per category, all drawn with the same encoding and the same scales.

When to use it

Use it when a single chart would need more than about five series. Comparison happens between panels rather than between overlapping lines, which is far easier to read. Use a multi-series line chart when the crossings between series are themselves the finding.

Design tips

  • Share the scale across every panel — that is the whole point of the form.

  • Order panels by something meaningful: size, rank, or geography, never alphabetically by default.

  • Strip the chrome down to one axis set for the grid rather than one per panel.
