React chart example
Streamgraph
Show how the composition of a total shifts over time as flowing bands.
What is a streamgraph?
A streamgraph is a stacked area chart centred on a flowing baseline rather than zero. Each band's thickness is its value, and the silhouette shows the total.
When to use it
Use it for many categories over a long period where the shape of the change is the story — energy sources over decades, genre popularity over years. Use a stacked area chart when readers need to read values against an axis, because a floating baseline makes precise reading impossible.
Design tips
Order bands so related categories sit together and the stream reads calmly.
Label bands in place where they are thickest rather than using a legend.
Accept that this chart trades precision for shape, and do not add a value axis pretending otherwise.
