React chart example
Tree diagram
Show a hierarchy as nodes connected by branches.
What is a tree diagram?
A tree diagram lays a hierarchy out as nodes joined by links, with depth running in one direction. It shows structure and relationships rather than quantity.
When to use it
Use it for org charts, taxonomies, decision paths and file structures — anywhere the shape of the hierarchy is the subject. Use a treemap instead when the size of each node matters more than how the levels connect.
Design tips
Keep the direction of depth consistent, and give every level the same spacing.
Label nodes directly; a tree with a legend has failed.
Collapse deep branches rather than shrinking the whole diagram to fit.

Use when node size matters more than explicit parent-child connections.
Use when quantities move between nodes rather than form a hierarchy.
