Beeswarm plot

Show every observation along one axis, nudged apart so none overlap.

What is a beeswarm plot?

A beeswarm plot places a point for each observation at its value on one axis, then offsets points perpendicular to that axis just enough to avoid overlap. The resulting width shows density.

When to use it

Use it when the individual observations matter as much as the distribution — outliers you want to name, a small population you want to show honestly. Use a histogram once there are too many points to distinguish.

Design tips

  • Keep the offset axis unlabelled; it carries no meaning beyond packing.

  • Size points so the densest cluster still reads as separate marks.

  • Add a median marker if readers need a summary as well as the spread.

Use when a smooth density shape matters more than individual points.

Use for a compact quartile summary across multiple groups.
