React chart example
Violin plot
Show the shape of a distribution as a mirrored density curve.
What is a violin plot?
A violin plot draws a smoothed density curve for each group, mirrored about its axis, so the width at any value shows how many observations sit there.
When to use it
Use it when the shape matters — bimodal distributions, long tails, or anywhere a box plot would flatten something important. Use a box plot when readers only need the quartiles, since a violin asks more of them.
Design tips
Mark the median and quartiles inside the violin; the curve alone gives no numbers.
Use the same bandwidth for every group or the shapes are not comparable.
Do not smooth so heavily that a small sample looks like a smooth population.
