React chart example
Box plot
Summarise a distribution with its quartiles, median and outliers.
What is a box plot?
A box plot draws a box from the lower to the upper quartile, a line at the median, whiskers to the extremes within range, and points for outliers beyond it.
When to use it
Use it to compare distributions across groups without drawing every observation — response times per endpoint, scores per cohort. Use a violin plot when the shape of the distribution matters, since a box hides multiple peaks entirely.
Design tips
State the whisker rule; readers cannot tell 1.5 IQR from min-max by looking.
Order groups by median rather than alphabetically.
Overlay the raw points when the group is small — a box plot of six values is a lie.

Use for one distribution when its binned shape should remain visible.
