Histogram

Show how a continuous measure is distributed across bins.

What is a histogram?

A histogram divides a continuous range into bins and draws a bar for how many observations fall in each. Bars touch, because the axis is continuous rather than categorical.

When to use it

Use it as the first look at any continuous variable — response times, order values, ages. It shows centre, spread, skew and outliers in one picture. Use a box plot when you need to compare distributions across many groups in a small space.

Design tips

  • Choose the bin width deliberately and say what it is; the shape depends on it.

  • Leave no gaps between bars — a gap implies a categorical axis.

  • Start counts at zero; a truncated count axis misrepresents the shape.
