Ridgeline plot
Stack density curves so distributions can be compared across groups.
What is a ridgeline plot?
A ridgeline plot draws one density curve per group, stacked vertically and slightly overlapping, so a set of distributions can be compared as a landscape.
When to use it
Use it for many groups measured on the same scale — temperatures by month, scores by cohort, latency by release. The overlap saves space and makes drift between groups visible. Use small multiples when precise reading per group matters.
Design tips
Order groups by something meaningful — time, or the value you want to show shifting.
Keep the overlap modest; too much and the curves become unreadable.
Share one x axis for the whole stack and label it once.
